How does a copier lease work?

The interesting thing is most folks believe a copier lease is more like a rental.  They return the copier at the end of the lease and then get another.  This type of lease is what is called a FMV Lease.  A FMV lease, or Fair Market Value lease, is a way to finance capital equipment and allows for the user to know the whole copier is being maintained under a maintenance program.  Of course a copier can be put under a maintenance program no matter how they bought the copier.

$1 Out or a FMV Lease?

Most people do a FMV lease for 5 years.  This means that the copier must be returned at the end of 5 years or the customer may pay what the leasing company feels is “Fair Market Value” for the lease and then the copier belongs to the client. With a $1 Out lease, the copier is leased just like a FMV lease, but at the end of the lease, for just $1 the company keeps the copier.

Generally a FMV Lease is about 5% cheaper than a $1 Out Lease, but the copier must be returned to the leasing company on their own dime, and this makes the $1 Out lease to be a better deal for most people in general.
