11 X 17 Copiers – Why Are they So Expensive?

One of the odd items we have to chat with clients about when they want 11X17 capability is why is it so much more expensive.  The main reason is the copiers are primarily built for different uses.  The Xerox WorkCentre 7835, for example, can easily handle 15,000 to 20,000 pages a month.  A similar speed copier, the WorkCentre 6605 is about $1,000 while the WorkCentre 7835 can be close to $10,000.  A huge difference when the speeds are so similar (35 pages a minute vs 36)

Now, if a client were to buy the 6605 because it is cheaper, it could get ugly fast.  Say they printed 5,000 of their 15,000 pages a month in color, leaving 10,000 to be in black and white.  Here is how the cost would break down on these 2 copiers.

WorkCentre 7835 –

5000 * .06 = $300

10,000 * .011 = $110

Lease Payment = $180 per Month

Total – Approx $590 per month.

WorkCentre 6605 –

5,000 * .13 = $650

10,000 * .018 = $180

Lease Payment = $20

Total – Approx $850 per month

So to have the copier which can’t do 11 X 17 in this scenario would cost $260 more a month or about $15,000 more over 5 years.  When you purchase a copier, it is important to run scenarios like this to ensure you are getting all the copier you need for the best price out there.
